I have been using natural deodorant for a while now. Why? because I do not like other deodorants that I used to buy at the stores. They left a nasty residue that only came off while scrubbing in the shower. So yeah, icckk no fun!
I started looking into what was really in deodorant and I did not like one bit. So after browsing around, I realized I had most of the ingredients for deodorant made at home. I just looked at the main ingredients and decided to make my own.
After trying this for a while, I liked what I noticed. It kept me feeling fresh all day and no stink! This was achieved with all natural ingredients that I already have in my home. You might have some of these too in your home.
First gather all your ingredients you'll need -
- Coconut Oil
- Baking Soda! Baking Soda! (lol for those who caught that)
- Arrowroot Powder
- Shea Butter or Cocoa Butter
- Essential Oils (I use Young Living, if you're curious ask me)
- Glass Jar (or recycle baby food jars) Measuring Spoons,
First you need to get a small pot, add some water about half way. No more than half of the actual container where you will be putting your deodorant in. Heat the water on low, not too high just enough so it can melt the coconut oil and shea/cocoa butter. What I like to use is all equal amounts. except for the shea/cocoa butter, I use a tablespoon. For the coconut oil use 1 cup.
When the oil and butter have melted together I take it off the water and add 1/2 cup of arrowroot powder and 1/2 cup of baking soda! baking soda! But first mix the arrowroot and then add in the baking soda. Mix it well and add about 8 to 10 drops of essential oil of choice. I really like to use Joy in my deodorant and it smells lovely. Every morning I apply it is a quick lift me up! Keeping me joyful all day.
So when you are satisfied with the scent, make sure you mix well and close your container and put it in the fridge and let it set. If some of you just want to try and don't feel like making so much, just use less. Instead of using 1 full cup you can only use 1/3 or 1/4 cup and go from there.
When your deodorant has set in the fridge for about an hour, you can definitely use it. It will be a soft, like spreadable consistency. It will not be hard like the other deodorants you get at the store. You just use a small dime amount and rub it under your pits and you should be good all day. This is not an antiperspirant.
*Keep in a cool place, this tends to melt in the summer heat. If you'd like you can add a bit of beeswax to keep it from melting.
